It takes almost three weeks after his return for John to start speaking to him again.
There are the obligatory one word responses to questions asked on Sherlock’s behalf but other than that there’s nothing. For once … Sherlock respects John’s need for privacy and doesn’t push further than he’s allowed.
After that … it’s a careful process to slowly re-adjust and rebuild what they’d had before Moriarty tore everything down. But the spider’s web is gone and they’re finally allowed to move forward. Finally. It feels as though several decades have passed rather than just three years.
Sherlock invites John out for a quick bite to eat at one of the man’s favorite restaurants two weeks later. John looks wary as they settle down at their table but willing to hear Sherlock out. For that .. the detective is grateful.
He tells John that he wants a chance to explain himself. To redeem himself. John says he already has.
Sherlock offers a wry smile then reaches across the tabletop to grasp his friend’s (his /only/ friend’s) hand. He squeezes his fingers gently and tilts his head just enough to meet John’s eyes.
”He said that I’m ordinary .. that I’m on the side of the angels.”
He doesn’t need to clarify who he’s talking about. John already knows. So Sherlock continues.
”I’m not an angel. It’s selfish and arrogant of me but I want you by my side. I hope your opinion of me hasn’t been irreparably tarnished.”
The tense lines around John’s eyes slowly melt away until Sherlock realizes the man is smiling. This isn’t the reaction he’d expected.
”You bloody idiot …”
Sherlock merely levels a stern look at the other man and squeezes his hand again.
”I’m not capable of love. I don’t know how to navigate that particular path. But I care for you. I care for you and I want you to know that this time.”
There are hints of tears in John’s eyes but Sherlock chooses to focus on the warmth of the smile aimed at him.
They’ll be alright. They always have been.

I wouldn’t go back to being a kid for anything, man. Not for anything. Kids have no control over their lives. They don’t make the rules, they don’t understand the rules, and nothing makes any sense. They also live with people who (if they’re lucky) love them unconditionally for just being, which sounds really nice but you know it means if you had been swapped out with anyone else their love would be exactly the same. So they aren’t so much loved for who they are yet; they’re loved because they’re owned by their parents.
Kids are like possessions, they’re a physical form of wish-fulfillment, they are carrying the weight of everyone’s expectations before they even understand what that means. And they’re not quite people yet. (Of course: they are people, but who sees them that way? Hardly anyone.)
Kids have no idea who they are; they haven’t had time to figure it out yet. They live in an extremely hostile environment created by other kids, who are applying their completely faulty understanding of how adult society works to their own playground. They make arbitrary rules everyone has to follow, and they ostracize anyone who doesn’t follow them. They are relentlessly cruel to each other and police everything from gender conformity to what tv shows you’re allowed to like with an iron fist no one will ever experience again. And it matters so much; it matters so much it rips you apart when they judge you and find you wanting. It feels like the end of the world, like your life is meaningless.
Kids are like wild animals, cannibalistically hunting in packs.
You couldn’t pay me enough to go back there. No way. Being grown up means having the means to live the way you want and the confidence to do it.
I’ll stick with adulthood, thanks. “Innocence” can suck it.
